Learn to work safely on ladders and scaffolding
Melior Access offers SETA accredited fall arrest training in Cape Town for those that work on scaffolding and ladders that need to know how to safely work at heights. Our range of nationally recognized IWH courses builds on top of one another to allow you to progress through your certification levels at a pace that works for you. If you work at heights exceeding 1.4 meters, you will need these skills.

IWH Fall Arrest
Level 1 Course
Course duration
What will you learn?
Learn how to work safely at heights exceeding 1.4 meters. This includes the correct safety procedures as well as fall arrest equipment needed to reduce the risk of injury or death from a fall.
Learners will be involved in performing tasks at height. Qualifying learners are able to follow fall arrest principles to perform work at height safely, under supervision of a qualified supervisor.
The qualifying learner will be capable of:
- Explaining the use and limitations of a limited range of fall arrest equipment and fall arrest plan
- Inspecting, assembling, and storing fall arrest equipment.
- Selecting suitable anchor points.
- Using fall arrest systems with a double lanyard.
- Using pre-installed vertical and horizontal lifelines
Qualifications and reward
Upon successful completion of this course, you will gain an IWH Certificate of Competency as well as the following:
NQF Level 1- Credits: 2
- SAQA ID: 22999
- SAQA Title: Explain and perform fall arrest techniques when working at height
Entry Requirements?
- Certified copy of your ID or passport (the original please). Unfortunately, your driver’s license will not be accepted
- A copy of a valid medical certificate provided by a suitable healthcare provider (doctor) that shows you are cleared to do rope access training and have no underlying health issues that prevent you from doing rope access training
- You must be able to comprehend, read and write English. You must also have basic numeracy skills
- 2 x Colour ID photos

IWH Fall Arrest &
Basic Rescue Level 2 Course
Course duration
What will you learn?
In this course we include all the theory and practical from the Fall Arrest Level 1 course and then build on top of that. In addition to the Fall Arrest Level 1 Course material, you will learn a range of skills and theory including safe installation practices of lifelines, the relevance of the fall protection plan, the correct emergency procedures, how to put together a comprehensive rescue plan and how to rescue a conscious/unconscious casualty.
The qualifying learner will be capable of:
- Explaining the use and limitations of a limited range of fall arrest equipment and fall arrest plan.
- Inspecting, assembling, and storing fall arrest equipment.
- Selecting suitable anchor points.
- Using fall arrest systems with a double lanyard.
- Using pre-installed vertical and horizontal lifelines
- Explaining the use of a range of fall arrest equipment and knowledge of applicable regulations.
- Explaining and using basic rope knots.
- Installing and using fall arrest systems.
- Inspecting and assembling fall arrest equipment and systems.
- Interpreting and implementing a fall protection plan.
- Performing basic fall arrest rescues to bring a casualty down to safety
Qualifications and reward
Upon successful completion of this course, you will gain an IWH Certificate of Competency as well as the following:

IWH Fall Protection
Planner Course
Course duration
3 days
What will you learn?
In this course you will learn how to manage teams that work at heigh. This includes how to effectively plan, manage and document activities so that they are compliant with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, as well as industry best practices.
The qualifying learner will be capable of:
- Perform a risk assessment of the worksite where work is to be done at height
- Demonstrate knowledge of fall arrest rescue equipment and advanced fall arrest rescue techniques
- Develop a fall protection plan and fall arrest plan
- Manage safety of personnel working at height
Qualifications and reward
Upon successful completion of this course, you will gain an IWH Certificate of Competency as well as the following:
NQF Level 4- Credits: 3
- SAQA ID: 229994
- SAQA Title: Assess a worksite for work at height and prepare a fall protection plan

Ladder Operator
Course

What will you learn?
Learn how to erect and use ladders safely. This course will teach you everything you need to know to use ladders up to 14m high.
The qualifying learner will be capable of:
- Ladder construction and inspection
- Understanding onsite safety
- Using ladders safely
- Erecting and taking down ladders
- Standard operating procedures for working with ladders
- Transporting and storage procedures for ladders
- General safety regulation pertaining to working with ladders

IWH Climbing Equipment Management, Inspection & Recertification Course

What will you learn?
Learn best practices on how to manage and inspect the equipment you will need to work at heights as per ISO-22846-1&2 standards
The qualifying learner will be capable of:
- Understanding the legislation regarding equipment inspections for working at height
- Correctly inspect and care for work et height equipment
- Correctly test equipment functionality
- Correctly inspect both hardware and software equipment
- Properly apply equipment control procedures such as inspection sheets and detailed description of various PPE used at height
- Trace equipment
