OPITO Rigging Initial
Training Course
(Stage 1 & 2)

Course duration

We offer a 3-day rigging training course, where delegates receive thorough explanations and practical demonstrations to understand the expectations of performing rigging operations. Through practical rigging exercises, delegates gain firsthand knowledge of equipment operations and the specific purposes of each piece of gear.

What will you learn?

Stage 1: Theory and practical (Standard code 9088)

Initial planning of tasks
Environmental considerations
Proximity hazards
Attaching/detaching and securing loads
De-rating of equipment and quarantining
Pre-use and post-use inspections
Preparation of lifting plans
Understanding sling angles and their effects on tension
Hands-on complex rigging tasks in teams, including cross hauling and routine lifts
Individual assessment of delegates’ planning skills and knowledge for given rigging tasks.

Stage 2: Work based experience

Upon completing the course, you will receive a Workplace Experience Logbook (Stage 2). This task-based logbook must be filled out during your offshore work and before your Initial Training certificate expires (within 2 years).

Qualification and reward

Upon successful completion of this course you will gain an OPITO Stage 1 qualification (Standard code 9088). OPITO standard code 9088 covers the safe use of rigging equipment in the offshore oil and gas industry. To qualify for Stage 2 you must complete your Workplace Experience Logbook within 2 years.

OPITO Rigger Competence Assessment Course (Stage 3) or Reassessment (Stage 4)

Course duration

The 2-day assessment or reassessment is specifically designed for evaluating your competence as a Rigger, with no training component involved. During this period, your skills and knowledge will be thoroughly examined to ensure you meet the required standards. Whether you are undergoing initial assessment or refreshing your certification, this rigorous evaluation is aimed at validating your capabilities as a skilled and proficient Rigger within the industry.

What will you learn?

Stage 3: Assessment of competency (Standard code 9099)
Stage 4: Re-assessment of competency (Standard code 9199)

The 2-day assessment or reassessment is a critical evaluation without any training component. The instructor will determine if you have the competence to become a Stage 3 (assessment) or Stage 4 (reassessment) Rigger, which allows you to carry out complex lifting operations independently. You will be required to demonstrate all tasks from the OPITO Rigger Initial Training course and exhibit a sound understanding of reading lifting plans. This assessment is based on your experiences logged in the Workplace Experience Logbook, showcasing your field learnings.

Entry Requirements?

Prerequisites for OPITO Rigger Assessment (Stage 3):

To be eligible for Rigger Competence Assessment (Stage 3), delegates must meet one of the following criteria:

Possess a valid OPITO-approved Rigger Initial Training Certificate along with a fully completed and valid OPITO Rigger Workplace Experience Logbook, signed and validated by the employing company head of discipline or discipline manager and confirmed by the Centre.
Hold an OPITO Approved Rigger Competence Assessment or Re-Assessment Certificate awarded within the past 30 months*.
Provide evidence of being assessed as competent and achieving an equivalent qualification/certification from a nationally recognized awarding body, within the past 30 months. Note that the certificate would no longer be valid after two years.

*Note: If your OPITO Rigger Assessment or Re-Assessment Certificate (or equivalent) has expired by more than 6 months, you must attend the OPITO Rigger Initial Training before undertaking the Rigger Competence Assessment. In such cases, completing a Workplace Experience Logbook is not required.

Prerequisites for OPITO Rigger Reassessment (Stage 4):
OPITO Rigger Assessment certificate (stage 3)

Qualification and reward

Upon successful completion of this course you will either gain an OPITO Stage 3 qualification (Standard code 9099) or Stage 4 (Standard code 9199) qualification in the case of a re-assessment.
